Automobiles imports will not be allowed for one more 6-7 months

Importation of automobiles is not going to be allowed for one more six to seven months, Secretary to the Treasury and Finance Ministry – R. S. Attygalle says.

Talking to media, he stated that he doesn’t assume it needs to be the precedence in the meanwhile.

Automobile imports have been suspended since final March amid a weakening economic system as a result of Covid-19 pandemic.

Nonetheless, at a gathering of the federal government MPs on Oct. 24 chaired by President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, a dialogue was held to import obligation free automobiles for MPs and ministers.

At a media briefing held the following day, the Basic Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) – MP Sagara Kariyawasam had replied to media queries raised on this regard as follows :

“It isn’t a choice to import automobiles. Throughout an earlier try to take action, MPs requested to postpone the measure as a result of prevailing financial issues within the nation. However now, the time has come to revisit this subject. The matter was solely taken up however no choice was taken,” he stated.
